Listen free to The Declining Winter – Haunt the Upper Hallways (Haunt the Upper Hallways, My Name in Ruins and more). 19 tracks (). When the brothers Adams allowed Hood an extended sabbatical it was always going to be interesting to see how far their musical paths would diverge from their unmistakable blueprint. Now temporarily freed from the pressures and expectations of the Hood.

Richard Adams of Yorkshire's post-rock pioneers Hood returns with a surprise second long-player then, following on from last year's Goodbye Minnesota. As with that record, Adams is joined by brother Chris (his Hood bandmate) plus Manyfingers man Chris Cole along with a host of other supporting players. The title track (and album opener) instantly transports you to the kind of idiosyncratic.

My Name In Ruins has the capacity to incite a fuming hatred in the listener by including some horrific guitar “twangs” that are wilfully out of tune. It’s like some kind of satanic sitar emulator, which emits effluent over any track it’s being used on. But for all of these gripes there are plenty of nice touches on Haunt The Upper watocentforrestlar.oranemetholbalecompiepressorwai.co: Sam Shepherd.

The Declining Winter Haunt the Upper Hallways (Home Assembly) Buy it from Insound Objectivity can be fleeting. Despite my attempts to ignore the band’s name, their snowy cover-art and even their blizzard-loving promotional video, I still hear Haunt the Upper Hallways as a wintry retreat from all civilization. Perhaps it’s unavoidable too that this Leeds-based group’s clear admiration.
